Taking responsibility for your choices has never looked better!
The building blocks for the monkeyglasses® DNA were laid in 2009, since then our design philosophy has been “looking good while doing good.” Monkeyglasses® have a Scandinavian feel and our eyewear is designed for the conscious consumer, offering a sustainable choice for the large group of people who need glasses and sunglasses. The team at monkeyglasses® is very focused on zero waste, and in particular the waste material from making the frames for the eyewear is given new life by transforming them into accessories. For some of the frames we use a super thin material, which is only 4 mm thick and very light. This makes the glasses very comfortable for the wearer.
We have designed special biodegradable materials for our collections to make the frames feel and look like wood, horn and crystal. Our unique products demonstrate consideration for both the environment and the people involved in making them. Monkeyglasses are made of cotton acetate – a special type of plastic that is about 95% cotton flower and wood, and the raw material is biodegradable. Cotton acetate is a nature-friendly material that is difficult to produce. It takes a long series of steps to achieve the desired effect and most of our materials are made specifically for Monkeyglasses collections.
Monkeyglasses is a pioneer in designing sustainable, exclusive eyewear and only 266 g of C02 is created by the activities during the making of a Monkeyglasses. It is important to us to keep the carbon footprint as low as possible, as well as the working conditions during production, since all our glasses are handmade. Each pair of Monkeyglasses has been handled more than 200 times before it is ready for use. It requires high standards to be Monkeyglassess supplier, as all manufacturers and suppliers must comply with the UN Global Compact guidelines for corporate social responsibility.
We believe that sustainability should be for everyone, regardless of budget, age or size. monkeyglasses® offers a sustainable choice for the conscious consumer that is both fashionable and affordable. Children’s glasses from monkeyglasses® help younger generations be sustainable. In this way, we all have the opportunity to be part of the solution, rather than the problem, when it comes to building a better future for our planet and future generations.
Save The Orangutan
Thousands of wild orangutans are lost every year – they are victims of the destruction of their rainforest home. This could mean the extinction of one of the four species of great apes in the world – one of our most intelligent and peaceful relatives. Save the Orangutan works to save the endangered orangutan and its rainforest habitat. The project supports the rescue and relocation of wild orangutans whose forest habitat has been destroyed, and the rehabilitation of orphaned orangutans who – without assistance – would die or be sold for the illegal pet trade. monkeyglasses® sponsors the rehabilitation work and Mai-Britt Seaton, the designer behind monkeyglasses®, has adopted Cinta the orangutan.
Eyeglasses are products that generally have a long life. The prescription needed may change, but that doesn’t mean the glasses are done with their work. Less fortunate people around the world also need glasses. monkeyglasses® helps collect old eyeglasses for the Danish organization Syn For Sagen I Africa, where old eyeglasses are taken by volunteer opticians to people in need, given new life and brought much joy. But when the life of a monkeyglasses® ends, the materials used for the frames are biodegradable and easily recycled.
