What is a cataract?

Cataract is a clouding of the lens that focuses the light entering the eye onto the retina. This cloudiness can cause impaired vision and eventually lead to blindness if left untreated.

Cataracts are the leading cause of preventable blindness worldwide. There is no medical treatment to prevent the development or progression of cataracts. Cataract surgery, in which the cloudy lens is removed and a new clear lens is implanted, is the only treatment for cataracts. Cataract surgery is the most effective and common procedure in medicine. This surgery generally has a high success rate when performed under the right conditions.

Cataracts often develop slowly with a gradual deterioration of vision that cannot be corrected with glasses. Common complaints include blurred vision, difficulty reading in low light, poor vision at night, glare and halos around lights, and sometimes double vision. Other signs include frequent changes in the strength of glasses and a new ability to read without reading glasses in patients over 55.

There are several types of cataracts;
  • Age (age-related cataract)
  • Congenital cataracts in newborns or young children.
  • As a result of medication use.
  • Chronic use of corticosteroids.
  • In metabolic diseases such as diabetes.
  • After trauma or radiotherapy.
  • From other eye conditions such as glaucoma or after other eye surgery.

To make a possible diagnosis of cataracts, we can perform several examinations on you:
  • Objective and/or subjective eye measurement.
  • Vision test with your own glasses.
  • Measurement of the eye pressure
  • Slit lamp examination.

If we have any doubts about the results, we will send you to an ophthalmologist (via your family doctor) with the results found.

Do you have a general question about cataracts or doubts about whether you are starting to get cataracts yourself? Don’t wait and come by our store so we can see if we can help you.

What is glaucoma?

Glaucoma is an eye disease in which the nerve fibers of the optic nerve are gradually lost.
The cause is probably poor blood flow to the optic nerve. Often – but not always – there is a relationship with excessive eye pressure.
