How can we help you?

The main function of glasses is still to enable people to see well or better. In the past, people would first visit an ophthalmologist, who would write a prescription for glasses, and only then would an optician become involved. Nowadays, you only visit an ophthalmologist if a qualified optician/optometrist deems it necessary.

Traditionally, making eyeglasses has been a craft profession; after all, the ordered optical lenses still need to be ground into the selected frames! Many optical companies outsource the grinding of lenses to central lens grinding facilities, but at Van der Geest Optiek, the craft is carried out in our own workshop. This ensures greater accuracy! We find the profession too beautiful to outsource this craft to third parties.

Services

We can help you with this:

Glasses

Glasses and sunglasses

Van der Geest Optiek has an extensive collection of frames and prides itself on having, as they say, "the most beautiful models and colors" in stock, with exclusivity playing a major role. They regularly attend trade fairs and receive visits from frame representatives to supplement their collection.

It is our years of experience and the art of thinking along with the customer that enable us to advise on the right choice of lenses, from single vision to multifocal, from sports glasses to sunglasses, and so on. We can also help you with sports glasses or children's glasses.

Measurements

Eye examination

Eye examination by an optician, with the appointment structured as follows:

  • medical history
  • visual acuity without correction
  • eye examination, check for binocular imbalance
  • determination of visual acuity with best correction
  • eye pressure measurement

If there is any doubt based on the medical history, visual acuity, or eye pressure, you will be referred to a specialist.

Lenses

Contact lenses

A contact lens fitting/check-up is as follows:

  • medical history
  • checking strength and vision
  • assessment of the lens (surface/fit)
  • eye assessment (tear film)
  • discussion about possible changes in lens type or solution

Lens check every six months. Lens wearers who have their lenses and eyes checked regularly have a significantly lower risk of problems. We will also keep you informed of the latest developments in the highly innovative world of contact lenses and solutions.

Repairs

Eyeglass repairs

Minor eyeglass repairs: Tightening loose screws, replacing nose pads if necessary, adjusting eyeglass arms, adjusting ear tips, and cleaning eyeglasses. All minor repairs are free of charge. You can drop by whenever you want. We call this our free lifetime service.

Major eyeglass repairs: Repairs such as soldering, welding, and gluing a break or replacing a part take more time. We will discuss the costs with you and let you know when you can pick up your repaired eyeglasses.

Maintain

Maintaining your own glasses

  • Rinse your glasses under running, lukewarm water to remove dust and other dirt. Then clean the lenses with a glasses cleaning spray.
  • Never use glass cleaner, soap, or other cleaning agents. These can damage the protective coating on the frame and lenses.
  • Use a glasses cloth, preferably a microfiber cloth. We do not recommend using tissues or paper towels, as these may contain wood fibers. This can damage the lenses.
  • Never place your glasses on their lenses.
  • Store your glasses in a glasses case.

Types of glass

The type of glass depends on daily activities and work.

Glass type

Single lenses

A single vision lens has one main strength, with the same values in every part of the lens. No matter where you look in the lens,
you will see the same as you do in the center.

This type of lens allows you to see both far and near. Depending on the loss of elasticity in the eye (age-related, usually from the age of 40), single vision lenses will no longer be sufficient for both far and near vision. Single vision lenses will then only be suitable for either far or near vision.

Single lenses are available in many grades.

Glass type

Multifocal lenses

Arms that are too short, blurry letters when reading?

Letters become blurred, especially when the lighting is poor. To still be able to read, you hold the text further and further away. This is not something to worry about. Everyone between the ages of 40 and 50 experiences this.

Multifocal lenses are the solution. They provide perfect vision at all distances: close up, far away, and everything in between. Because the lenses have multiple strengths (compared to single vision lenses with a single strength), you can use them both as reading glasses and as normal distance glasses. This means you don't need to keep putting on and taking off multiple pairs of glasses.

Glass type

Office glasses

Frequent and prolonged use of computers places enormous demands on us, with complaints such as tired eyes and headaches being common symptoms/characteristics. Glasses wearers may also experience neck problems resulting from unnatural posture. Maximum support at both short and medium distances is also desirable.

If single vision and/or multifocal lenses are insufficient, office lenses can be an ideal solution for continuing to perform all tasks without related complaints and ergonomic limitations. Intensive PC users in particular will find these lenses particularly comfortable.
