Three generations of craftsmanship
Over the years, we have become the third generation, and we still practice our craft with the same passion: fashion-forward, artisanal, and with an eye for both young and old. Over the generations, this family business has adapted, but what began in 1930, we continue today with just as much dedication. You can feel that experience the moment you walk in. We know our customers, remember names and stories, and love building relationships that last for years. With us, you’re not just a number, but someone we truly get to know.
We love doing the work ourselves, and we do it well. In our in-house lab, we custom-make your lenses, even for frames you bring in yourself. We think about materials, service, and quality every single day. We work with top-quality lenses from Nikon and other renowned suppliers and give you honest advice on what truly suits your eyes, lifestyle, and needs. Seeing well starts with listening well, which is why we don’t set a time limit on appointments. We take the time to examine your eyes, understand your needs, and work with you to find the best solution—using clear language and avoiding unnecessary jargon.
Behind this dedication is a close-knit family team. Lian brings over forty years of experience as an optician and contact lens specialist, Roy offers expert advice on frames and lenses, and Izaac, representing the third generation, assists you with equal skill and expertise. Together, we carefully curate our collection—from Japanese titanium to French and Italian designs—featuring exclusive brands you won’t find just anywhere. We’re happy to advise you on the various styles and origins of our frames. Because, as far as we’re concerned, seeing well should also look good.
We handle minor repairs—such as replacing a screw, a nose pad, or making a quick adjustment—at no charge, simply because that’s what we do. For more extensive repairs, we always discuss the costs upfront, so you’ll never face any surprises. Whether you’re ready for a new pair of glasses, want to try contact lenses, or are just looking for advice, you’re always welcome at our store on Generaal Cronjestraat in Haarlem. Thinking of stopping by? Feel free to drop in—we’d be happy to make time for you.
Our History
October 18, 1930 – September 10, 1966 — van der Geest
This is a photo from the archives. Piet van der Geest poses proudly with his wife in front of their newly opened store at 15 Generaal Cronjestraat. At the time, Van der Geest Optiek sold much more than just eyeglasses: opera glasses and binoculars, barometers, hygrometers, and thermometers, and even small hardware items. Mr. Van der Geest was known as “Uncle Piet,” who, in addition to his profession, was a member of the volunteer fire department. An alarm bell hung in the shop; if it went off, Piet would close the door to help put out the fire.

September 10, 1966, to December 31, 1989 — Vester
Harry and Barbara Vester in front of their beautiful store. Over many years, they built up a loyal customer base thanks to their expertise and passion for the optical trade. Mrs. Vester, in particular, had a special bond with the customers. In the early years, Mr. Vester would stay up late into the evening grinding lenses by hand and fitting them into the frames they had sold. After a few years, he bought his first grinding machine. Over time, there have been many changes. After many years of hard work, they passed the torch with peace of mind to their niece Lian and her partner Roy, who are continuing the store in their own way.

January 1, 1990–present — Roy and Lian
With Lian and Roy, the store welcomed a new generation, yet its familiar character remained intact: craftsmanship, personal attention, and taking the time for every customer. Lian became an experienced optician and contact lens specialist, while Roy put his keen eye for frames and lens advice to good use. The in-house lens lab remained the heart of the business, now equipped with modern machines that allow us to custom-cut lenses, even for frames that customers bring in themselves. Meanwhile, with son Izaac, the next generation is already ready to take the reins, ensuring that the craft and the stories that have been part of it since 1930 are passed on with the same dedication. We make no compromises when it comes to craftsmanship and commitment.
