Optician in Haarlem since 1930
Van der Geest Optiek is a fourth-generation family business. We take our time with you and work without rushing. We make most of our glasses in our own workshop, so you know exactly who is working on your glasses.
Our store is located at 86 Generaal Cronjéstraat in Haarlem-Noord. It’s just a few minutes by bike from downtown; buses stop right near the shopping street; and if you’re driving, the easiest place to park is the Cronjé parking garage. You can read more about the neighborhood under “Optician in Haarlem-Noord.” For an eye exam or contact lens fitting, please make an appointment so we can set aside plenty of time for you. For a quick fitting, a minor repair, or to pick up your contact lenses, you’re also welcome to just drop by.
Eye Exam and Intraocular Pressure Measurement
A certified optician will examine your eyes to determine if you need glasses or contact lenses. We take our time and explain what we’re measuring. An eye exam is free if you purchase glasses, lenses, or contact lenses from us, or if it turns out that you don’t need a vision solution. A standalone eye exam costs €45. An eye pressure test is always free. To find out how often you should have your eyes checked, see the section on how often you need an eye exam.
We perform eye exams for children starting around ages 9 to 10. If we detect an abnormal result, we’ll refer you to your primary care physician. To learn about the difference between us and an ophthalmologist, see the section on “Optician, Optometrist, or Ophthalmologist.” For information on how to prepare, see “Preparing for Your Appointment.”
Measuring UV and Blue Light
Not sure how much UV and blue light your lenses block? Bring your glasses or sunglasses with you, and we’ll measure how much UV and blue light they block—free of charge—right in the store. You can read more about protection under “Coatings” and “Blue Light Filter.”
Contact lenses
We fit daily disposable lenses, monthly lenses, and toric lenses. During a lens fitting, we first measure your eyes. Then you’ll receive trial lenses, and we’ll teach you how to insert, remove, and care for them. A follow-up appointment will take place after 1 to 2 weeks, and another one if necessary, until the lenses fit properly. Follow-up appointments are always by appointment.
If you buy your contact lenses from us, your checkups are free. You can reorder by phone, email, in-store, or via home delivery. Learn more under "Contact Lenses."
Eyeglasses, Sunglasses, and Eyeglass Lenses
In our store, you'll find frames from exclusive brands that you won't find just anywhere. We can also help you find prescription sunglasses, children's glasses, sports glasses, computer glasses, or custom reading glasses.
After your eye exam, we’ll recommend the lenses that are right for you. Using a Nikon digital measuring station, we’ll determine exactly where the lenses should be positioned in front of your eyes. We then grind most of the lenses in our own lens-grinding facility. New frames and lenses come with a 2-year warranty against material and manufacturing defects; see Article 12 of our Terms and Conditions.
Advice on Choosing
Not sure which glasses are right for you? We’ll work with you to consider your face shape, your job, and your hobbies. You’ll find tips on which glasses suit your face shape and how much they cost. To learn how an appointment with us works, see the “Your Visit” section.
Eyeglass Fitting and Repair
If your glasses don't fit well or are crooked, we'll adjust them. We usually take care of minor repairs—such as tightening a screw or replacing the nose pads—right away. If you purchased your glasses from us, this service is always free of charge. For glasses purchased elsewhere, we usually do this free of charge as well, subject to consultation and at your own risk.
For larger repairs, we always discuss the costs in advance. We can sometimes weld broken acetate frames ourselves in our workshop. We have metal frames soldered or (laser) welded by a specialist. You can read more under “Eyeglass Repairs.”
Cleaning Your Glasses Yourself
Here's how to clean your glasses without scratching them:
- First, rinse your glasses under cold or lukewarm running water—never under hot water—to remove dust and sand; otherwise, they could cause scratches;
- Then wash the glasses with your wet hands and a little mild hand soap (not harsh or citrus-based soap), rinse them thoroughly, and dry your glasses with a clean, 100% cotton cloth, such as a clean dish towel;
- If you prefer to use eyeglass cleaner, choose one that doesn't contain alcohol; alcohol can damage the coating. We carry a suitable eyeglass cleaner;
- Don't have any water on hand while you're out and about? First, blow away any dust and sand, and then remove fingerprints with a dry microfiber cloth;
- Never use dish soap, glass cleaner, alcohol, or other harsh chemicals, and avoid using paper, tissues, or wet wipes: paper contains wood fibers that can cause scratches;
- Never set your glasses down on their lenses; store them in a case and keep them away from heat sources, such as a warm car dashboard, a hot oven, or a sunny windowsill. You can read why under “Heat and Craquelure.”
